Arick Shao | 邵崇哲 |
About Me
My birth name, in Chinese, is 邵崇哲, which was inexplicably transliterated into English as Chung-Tse Shao (try saying that right) by the powers that be. Fortunately, my parents had enough foresight to give me an English name, in fact, one with the same pronunciation as the common name "Eric". Less fortunately, they also decided to be original with the spelling, so I ended up with "Arick" Shao, and people generally have no idea how to say it. I was born in Taipei, Taiwan (台北,台灣) and I spent the first six years of my life in Taiwan. My parents then brought me to the United States, and I grew up in Duncan, Oklahoma, a small town of about 20,000 people. Since then, I've lived and studied in Austin, Texas and Princeton, New Jersey, and I've lived and worked in Toronto, Ontario. I am currently living and working, as a mathematician and academic, in London, England. |
